I pull away, sit back and look at the mess I've made. Blood like shadows fallen across his face. I bring my nose close and smell. Very gently push it into the dip between neck and shoulder, a soft damp hollow, move upwards. Tip his head so it falls to one side. There's no resistance. With my paw I do it again, make it roll back so he's turned towards me. I sit on my haunches and look at him. It's true, he's smiling like I've done a good thing, like I've made him happy.
